Gas Stove Cleaning: How to Clean a Hob and Burners Properly

To clean a gas stove, turn off the gas and let everything cool, lift off the pan supports and burner caps, soak them in hot soapy water, wipe the hob surface with a degreaser, then dry every part completely before putting it back in the right position. The most important rule is to never let water, cleaner or crumbs block the small burner ports, because blocked ports cause uneven flames and ignition problems.

Singapore kitchens put stoves through a lot. High-heat wok cooking throws oil onto the hob, sauces boil over, and the humidity helps grease turn sticky. A ten-minute wipe after cooking and a deeper clean every few weeks keeps it manageable.

Safety first

  • Turn the burner knobs off and close the gas supply valve if you'll be removing parts or using a lot of liquid.
  • Let it cool fully. Pan supports and burner caps stay hot long after the flame is out.
  • Don't spray directly onto the hob. Spray your cloth instead, so liquid doesn't run into the burner heads or ignition points.
  • Never use sharp tools in the burner ports. A toothpick can snap off inside.
  • If you smell gas after reassembling, turn everything off, open windows, don't use switches or flames, and contact your gas supplier.

What you'll need

  • Dishwashing liquid and hot water
  • A degreaser suitable for your hob surface
  • A non-scratch sponge and an old toothbrush
  • A straightened paper clip or the needle provided by some manufacturers for clearing ports
  • Microfibre cloths
  • Baking soda for stubborn burnt-on spots

Deep cleaning a gas hob, part by part

Pan supports

Cast iron or enamelled steel supports carry the most baked-on grease. Soak them in a basin of hot water with dishwashing liquid for 20 to 30 minutes, then scrub with a non-scratch pad. For heavy carbon, a paste of baking soda and water left for a while before scrubbing helps. Check the manufacturer's advice before putting supports in a dishwasher.

Burner caps and heads

Lift off the caps and the burner heads, noting how they sit. Soak the caps in warm soapy water and scrub gently. For the burner heads, clean the outside with a damp cloth and clear each port with a straightened paper clip, poking gently straight in and out. Shake out any debris. Avoid soaking burner heads that contain ignition parts.

Hob surface

  • Stainless steel: wipe with diluted degreaser, then buff dry in the direction of the grain to prevent streaks.
  • Tempered glass: use a glass-safe cleaner and a soft cloth. Avoid scouring pads, which leave fine scratches.
  • Enamel: warm soapy water and a soft sponge; harsh abrasives dull the finish.

Clean around the ignition electrodes, the small white ceramic points, with a dry toothbrush only.

Knobs and front panel

Many knobs pull straight off. Wash them in soapy water and dry thoroughly. Wipe the panel behind with a barely damp cloth, keeping liquid out of the stems.

Reassemble and test

Make sure every part is completely dry. Water in the burner head is the most common reason a hob won't ignite after cleaning. Seat each cap flat and centred, then light each burner. The flame should be even and mostly blue. A patchy or yellow flame means a part is misaligned, wet or still blocked.

How often

  • After each cooking session: wipe spills on the hob once cool
  • Weekly: wash pan supports and caps if you cook daily
  • Monthly: full strip-down, clear ports, clean knobs
  • Every few months: clean the wall behind the hob and the cooker hood

The hob and the hood work together. Grease that escapes a dirty hood settles back on the stove, so our cooker hood cleaning guide is a natural next step.

Common mistakes

  • Spraying cleaner straight onto burners
  • Putting caps back wet
  • Using steel wool on glass or stainless steel
  • Mixing oven cleaner with other products. See dangerous cleaning product combinations
  • Leaving pan supports to soak overnight in strong cleaners, which can damage enamel

Getting help with the kitchen

Wiping the stove exterior and splashback is part of every standard kitchen clean with Cleaning Assistant, and a more thorough hob strip-down can be included in a deep clean. Our cleaners use the degreaser and tools you provide, so you know exactly what touches your cooking surfaces. Frequently asked questions

Why won't my gas stove light after cleaning?

Usually water is still in the burner head or the cap isn't sitting flat. Remove the cap, dry everything thoroughly, reseat it and try again. If it still won't ignite, the electrode may need attention from a technician.

Can I soak burner caps overnight?

Brass and enamelled caps generally handle a soak in warm soapy water, but avoid strong chemicals for long periods. An hour is usually enough, followed by a gentle scrub.

How do I remove burnt-on grease from a stainless steel hob?

Apply a paste of baking soda and a little water, leave it for 15 minutes, then work it off with a non-scratch sponge. Finish with a degreaser wipe and buff dry along the grain.

Is it safe to use oven cleaner on a gas hob?

Only if the manufacturer says so for your surface. Oven cleaners are strong and can damage enamel, glass trim and aluminium parts, so a dedicated hob degreaser is the safer choice.
