Aircon Filter Cleaning in Singapore: A DIY Guide and When to Call a Pro
4 October 20266 min read
You can clean your aircon filters at home in about 15 minutes per unit: switch off the power, lift the front panel, slide the mesh filters out, vacuum or rinse them with lukewarm water, let them dry fully in the shade, and slide them back in. That is the part of an aircon a homeowner is meant to maintain. Anything inside the unit, such as the coils, blower wheel, drain pipe or a chemical wash, is a job for a licensed aircon technician.
Here is how to do the user-serviceable part properly, and how to recognise when the problem is deeper.
What you can safely clean yourself
Most wall-mounted split units in Singapore homes, the kind fitted in nearly every HDB bedroom and condo, have the same user-accessible parts:
- The front panel or cover, which lifts up on hinges or unclips
- The mesh air filters, usually two, which slide out
- Optional extra filters some brands fit, such as deodorising or fine-dust inserts. Check your manual: some are replaceable, not washable
- The outer casing and louvres, which can be wiped
What you should not attempt: removing the casing, spraying into the coils, cleaning the blower wheel, or unclogging the drain line. These risk damaging fins or electronics, and water in the wrong place causes leaks and faults.
Step-by-step: cleaning aircon filters
- Turn the unit off at the remote and then at the wall isolator switch. Give it a few minutes if it has been running.
- Put a towel on the bed or floor below. Dust falls when the panel opens.
- Lift the front panel until it clicks into its raised position. Do not force it past where it stops.
- Slide the filters out by gently lifting the tab and pulling down. Note which way they sit.
- Vacuum the dust off first, using a brush attachment on the side that faced the room. This removes most of the dust before you add water and stops it turning to mud.
- Rinse with lukewarm water from the back side so dust is pushed out the way it came in. A soft brush and a drop of mild dishwashing liquid help with greasy filters, such as units near an open kitchen.
- Dry in the shade. Strong direct sun can warp plastic frames. Shake off excess water and leave them on a rack until completely dry.
- Wipe the front panel and louvres with a damp microfibre cloth, then dry.
- Refit the filters the right way round, lower the panel, and switch the isolator back on.
Never run the aircon without filters fitted, even briefly. Dust goes straight onto the coil.
How often to clean aircon filters in Singapore
Manufacturers generally recommend checking filters every few weeks with regular use. In practice:
| Usage | Suggested filter cleaning |
|---|---|
| Bedroom unit used every night | Every 2 to 4 weeks |
| Living room unit used daily, near kitchen | Every 2 to 3 weeks |
| Occasional use | Monthly or before heavy use |
| Home with pets or near construction | Every 2 weeks |
Follow your unit's manual where it gives a schedule. If the filter looks grey and furry, it is overdue.
Signs you need a technician, not a cloth
Clean filters fix a lot, but not everything. Call a licensed aircon servicing company if you notice:
- Water dripping from the indoor unit. Usually a clogged drain pipe or tray.
- Weak cooling even with clean filters. Could be dirty coils, low refrigerant or a fault.
- A musty or sour smell that remains after cleaning the filters. Mould on the coil or blower is common in humid conditions.
- Black specks blowing out of the vents. Often mould on the blower wheel.
- Unusual noise or ice on the pipes.
Many Singapore households book routine general servicing every few months, and a chemical wash or overhaul when a unit has been neglected. Ask your servicing company what suits your usage.
What Cleaning Assistant does and does not do
To be clear about scope: our cleaners wipe the exterior of aircon units, including covers and louvres, as part of a standard clean, and you can ask them to rinse removable filters during a deep clean. We do not do internal aircon servicing, gas top-ups, chemical washes or overhauls. Those need a qualified aircon technician with the right tools.
If you are planning a full deep clean, it works well to book aircon servicing first, then a home clean afterwards, since servicing can leave dust and drips around the unit. Our room-by-room deep cleaning guide explains the full order of work.
Helping your aircon and your air quality
- Dust the room regularly. Every bit of dust on shelves and fans eventually passes through the aircon filter. A clean ceiling fan and wiped blinds mean less load on the unit.
- Keep windows closed while the aircon runs, then open them to air the room afterwards. Humid air rushing in feeds condensation and mould.
- Wash bedding weekly and vacuum the mattress. See our guide to mattress cleaning and dust mites.
- Watch for haze periods. When outdoor air quality is poor, filters clog faster. Our haze season cleaning guide covers this.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wash aircon filters with soap?
Yes, a drop of mild dishwashing liquid in lukewarm water is fine for standard mesh filters. Avoid bleach, strong degreasers and hot water, which can weaken the mesh or warp the frame.
Is it safe to use a coil cleaning spray myself?
It is not recommended. Overspray can reach electrical parts, and residue left on the coils can drip or smell. Coil cleaning is best left to a technician as part of servicing.
Why does my aircon still smell after I cleaned the filters?
The smell usually comes from mould or bacteria on the coil, blower wheel or drain tray, which filter cleaning does not reach. If the smell persists, book a servicing or chemical wash with an aircon company.
Do your cleaners clean aircon units?
Our cleaners wipe the exterior casing and louvres, and can rinse removable filters on request. Internal servicing and chemical washes are outside our scope and should be done by aircon technicians.
