Mattress Cleaning in Singapore: Keeping Dust Mites Down in the Humidity
10 October 20265 min read
To clean a mattress at home, strip the bed, vacuum the mattress slowly with an upholstery attachment, spot-treat any stains with a barely damp cloth, sprinkle baking soda to absorb odour, then vacuum again after a few hours. Do this every one to three months, wash bedding weekly in hot water if the fabric allows, and use a washable mattress protector. In Singapore's humidity, keeping the mattress dry matters as much as keeping it clean.
Why mattresses need extra care in Singapore
Dust mites are tiny creatures that live in bedding, mattresses and upholstery and feed on shed skin flakes. They thrive in warm, humid conditions, which describes most Singapore bedrooms for much of the year. Mattresses also absorb sweat every night. If a mattress stays slightly damp and is never aired, it can develop a musty smell and, in poorly ventilated rooms, even mould spots.
The goal is not to sterilise a mattress, which is not realistic at home. It is to reduce dust, keep the surface dry and stop stains and smells from setting in.
What you will need
- A vacuum with an upholstery or crevice attachment (a handheld vacuum with a mattress head also works)
- Baking soda and a sieve or shaker
- Microfibre cloths
- Mild dishwashing liquid or an upholstery spot cleaner
- A spray bottle of cool water
- A fan, or a well-ventilated room
Step-by-step mattress cleaning
1. Strip and wash the bedding
Remove sheets, pillowcases, duvet cover and the mattress protector. Wash them on the hottest setting the care labels allow. Dry fully, using a dryer or a sunny spot, before putting them back.
2. Vacuum slowly
Go over the whole top surface in overlapping strips, slowly, so the suction has time to work. Use the crevice tool along seams, piping and around buttons, where dust gathers. Do the sides too.
3. Spot-treat stains
Work on one stain at a time and keep moisture to a minimum. Mattresses are thick and dry slowly, and a soaked mattress invites mould.
- Sweat or yellowing: a cloth dampened with water and a little dishwashing liquid, dabbed (not rubbed), then blotted with a dry cloth.
- Fresh spills: blot immediately with paper towels, then treat as above.
- Biological stains: use cool water, never hot, which can set proteins. An enzyme-based upholstery cleaner helps; follow the label.
Always test on a hidden spot first and check the manufacturer's care label. Memory foam and latex can be damaged by heavy wetting.
4. Baking soda for odour
Sprinkle a thin, even layer of baking soda over the surface using a sieve. Leave it for a few hours, ideally with a fan running and windows open. It absorbs some moisture and odour.
5. Vacuum again
Vacuum up all the baking soda thoroughly, including the seams.
6. Air and rotate
Leave the mattress uncovered with the fan on for an hour if you can. Then rotate it head-to-foot. Only flip it if the manufacturer says it is double-sided; many modern mattresses are single-sided.
Airing in a humid climate
Airing helps, but opening windows on a muggy, rainy afternoon can add moisture. A few practical rules:
- Air the room on dry, breezy days, not during rain.
- Run a fan across the bare mattress after cleaning.
- If your room has aircon, running it for a while lowers humidity in the room.
- Do not carry a mattress out to the corridor or common areas; it is impractical in most flats and blocks shared spaces.
- Avoid leaning a damp mattress against a wall, where trapped moisture can encourage mould on both.
Mattress protectors: the easiest win
A washable protector stops sweat and spills reaching the mattress and is much easier to clean. Options:
| Type | Benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Basic cotton or poly protector | Cheap, washable, breathable | Not waterproof |
| Waterproof protector | Blocks spills and accidents, good for kids | Can feel warmer |
| Zippered encasement | Covers the whole mattress | Fiddly to remove and wash |
Wash the protector every two to four weeks, or immediately after a spill.
How often to do what
| Task | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Wash sheets and pillowcases | Weekly |
| Wash mattress protector | Every 2 to 4 weeks |
| Vacuum mattress | Every 1 to 3 months |
| Baking soda refresh | Every 3 months |
| Rotate mattress | Every 3 months |
| Wash or replace pillows | Per label; replace when lumpy or stained |
Signs it's time for professional help or a replacement
- Mould spots on the mattress surface or underside
- Persistent odour after cleaning
- Large or deep stains from accidents
- Sagging that makes sleeping uncomfortable
Mould inside a mattress is hard to fix at home; replacement is often the better option. For steam or extraction cleaning, look for a specialist upholstery service.
Where it fits in a deep clean
Mattress vacuuming is part of the bedroom section of our room-by-room deep cleaning guide. The same humidity that affects mattresses affects wardrobes, covered in stopping wardrobe mould. If anyone in the home reacts to dust, see allergy-friendly home cleaning, and for sofas, read fabric sofa cleaning.
Cleaning Assistant's cleaners can strip beds, vacuum mattresses and remake beds during a deep clean, using your vacuum and products. That way you decide what touches the surfaces your family sleeps on.
Frequently asked questions
Can I put my mattress in the sun in Singapore?
Sunlight helps dry and freshen a mattress, but most flats have no practical place to do it safely, and sudden rain is common. A fan and good ventilation indoors on a dry day are a more realistic option.
Does baking soda kill dust mites?
No. Baking soda mainly absorbs odour and some moisture. Regular vacuuming, washing bedding in hot water and using a protector are what keep dust levels down.
How do I get rid of a musty smell in a mattress?
Vacuum, apply baking soda for several hours, vacuum again and dry the mattress well with a fan. If the smell returns quickly, check for mould on the underside and the bed base, and improve ventilation in the room.
