Balcony Cleaning in Singapore: Floors, Railings and Planter Boxes
2 October 20266 min read
Balcony cleaning in Singapore is mostly about three things: keeping water draining so mosquitoes can't breed, removing the black dust and algae that build up on floors and railings, and doing it all without anything falling or anyone leaning over the edge. A sweep and wipe every week or two, plus a proper scrub monthly, keeps most balconies in good shape.
Balconies take a beating here. They catch rain, wind-blown dust, bird droppings, leaf litter and, in some months, haze particles. Because they're partly outdoors, they also stay damp after storms, which is what turns floor tiles slippery and green.
Start with drainage and planter boxes
Before you scrub anything, check where water collects. This is the job that matters most for health, not just appearance.
Why it matters
NEA notes that a small amount of clean, stagnant water is enough for Aedes mosquitoes to breed, and balconies and planter boxes are full of spots where water sits after rain. NEA's B-L-O-C-K steps, which it advises households to do at least once a week, include breaking up hardened soil and lifting and emptying flowerpot plates. The full list is on NEA's Stop Dengue page.
What to check
- Planter box drain holes. Soil, roots and leaves block them. Clear them so water flows out instead of pooling at the bottom of the box.
- Hardened soil. Loosen the top layer of soil in pots and planters so water soaks in rather than sitting on the surface.
- Flowerpot saucers. Empty them, or remove them if you can.
- Floor drain or scupper. Clear leaves and dirt from the balcony floor drain so rainwater doesn't puddle.
- Forgotten containers. Watering cans, pails, toys and even upturned lids collect water.
Our dengue prevention cleaning guide covers the rest of the home.
A monthly balcony clean
- Move furniture and pots inside or to one side. This lets you reach the corners where dirt gathers.
- Dry sweep. Sweep leaves, soil and dust towards a dustpan, not over the edge or into the drain.
- Wipe the railings and ledges. Use a damp microfibre cloth on metal railings and the ledge tops. Bird droppings come off more easily after you soften them with a damp cloth for a few minutes. Wear gloves.
- Clean glass railings or panels from the inside. Use a glass cleaner and a squeegee or lint-free cloth on the side you can reach safely. Leave the outer face if it means leaning out.
- Scrub the floor. Mix a bucket of warm water and a mild floor cleaner. Scrub with a stiff brush, focusing on grout lines and the edges where algae starts. Rinse with a small amount of water and push it to the floor drain.
- Wipe the sliding door track. The balcony door track fills with grit that wears the rollers. A vacuum crevice tool and an old toothbrush clear it.
- Clean furniture. Wipe outdoor chairs and tables, and wash cushions according to their labels.
- Let it dry, then put everything back.
Most condo balconies take 30 to 60 minutes, depending on size, the number of plants and how long since the last clean.
Dealing with specific problems
| Problem | What works |
|---|---|
| Green algae on tiles | Scrub with a floor cleaner or diluted bleach solution, rinse, and improve drainage |
| Black dust on ledges and railings | Damp microfibre, rinsed often |
| Bird droppings | Soften with a damp cloth, lift off, then disinfect the spot |
| Water stains on glass | Glass cleaner or diluted vinegar, then squeegee dry |
| Rust marks from pots | Lift pots onto feet; treat stains with a tile-safe rust remover |
| Haze film | Wipe all surfaces after the haze clears, starting from the top |
After a bad haze spell, our haze season home cleaning guide explains how to clear the fine dust from indoors and out.
Safety at height
Balcony cleaning goes wrong when people try to reach too far. Keep it safe:
- Never stand on chairs, stools or planters to reach high points or the outer side of railings.
- Don't lean over the railing to clean the outside of glass panels or ledges.
- Secure loose items. Cloths, brushes and spray bottles can fall from height. Killer litter is an offence and can seriously injure someone below.
- Don't hose down a balcony in a high-rise block. Water can run over the edge onto neighbours' units. Use a bucket and controlled amounts of water.
- Watch your step. Wet tiles are slippery, especially with algae.
Condo vs HDB balconies
Condo balconies are often larger, with glass railings and timber decking or large-format tiles, which need more frequent glass cleaning and gentler products on decking. HDB flats with balconies or planter ledges tend to have tiled floors and metal grilles or railings, and the planter box is often the main dengue checkpoint. For more on condo-specific cleaning, read our condo cleaning guide, and for the grilles many HDB flats have, see the window grille cleaning guide.
Adding balcony cleaning to your sessions
Balcony cleaning is one of the extras Cleaning Assistant can add on request to a regular or one-off clean. Our cleaners clean only what can be reached safely from inside the balcony, and they use the supplies you provide, which also means you decide what's used around your plants and pets. It's also a common part of a deep clean.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I clean my balcony in Singapore?
Sweep and check for stagnant water weekly, and do a full scrub monthly. After heavy storms or haze, a quick extra wipe-down is worth doing.
Can I use bleach on my balcony floor?
Diluted bleach works on ceramic tiles with algae, but rinse well and keep it away from plants, timber decking and metal railings. Never mix it with other cleaning products.
What's the safest way to clean the outside of balcony glass?
If you can't reach it comfortably without leaning over, don't attempt it. Many condos arrange periodic exterior cleaning of facades, so it's worth checking with your management office.
Do planter boxes really cause dengue?
They can if water collects in them. Blocked drain holes, hardened soil and saucers under pots are all common breeding spots, so check them weekly.
