Window Grille Cleaning in Singapore: Grilles and Tracks in HDB Flats

Planning a bigger clean? See our room-by-room guide to Deep Cleaning in Singapore.

Window grille cleaning in an HDB flat is a dry-then-wet job: brush or vacuum the loose dust off the bars first, then wipe each bar with a damp microfibre cloth wrapped around your hand, working from the top down. Tracks come next, with a vacuum crevice tool and an old toothbrush. And the one rule that matters more than any technique: never lean, climb or reach out of a high-rise window to clean. Clean what you can reach from inside and leave the rest.

This guide covers grilles, sliding tracks and frames, plus the window safety checks worth doing while you are there.

Why grilles get so dirty

Most HDB flats have grilles on windows and sometimes on the main door and service yard. They sit in the path of outdoor air, so they catch traffic dust, construction dust, pollen and, in coastal estates, a film of salt. Because windows are often left open for ventilation, that dust then blows indoors. Rain splash and humidity bind it into a grey grime that a dry cloth just smears.

Painted mild-steel grilles can also rust where paint has chipped, and aluminium or powder-coated grilles develop a chalky dullness if left dirty for a long time.

What you will need

  • A vacuum with a brush and crevice attachment
  • Several microfibre cloths, and an old cotton glove or sock (wear it like a mitten)
  • A bucket of warm water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid
  • An old toothbrush and a small flat brush or paintbrush for corners
  • A spray bottle of plain water or mild all-purpose cleaner
  • Old towels to lay along the sill

Step-by-step: cleaning window grilles

  1. Close the window panes where possible so dust does not blow back in, and lay towels along the sill and floor.
  2. Dry dust first. Run a soft brush or the vacuum brush head along every bar, top to bottom. Wet cleaning on top of heavy dust creates mud streaks.
  3. Glove-wipe the bars. Dip the cotton glove or a microfibre in the soapy water, wring well, and wrap your hand around each bar, sliding along it. This is far quicker than wiping with a flat cloth.
  4. Use the toothbrush on joints and decorative curls where grime collects.
  5. Rinse-wipe with a clean damp cloth, then dry with a fresh cloth to prevent water spots and rust.
  6. Check for rust spots. Small spots on painted grilles can be lightly sanded and touched up with rust-resistant paint later.

Avoid steel wool and abrasive powders, which strip paint and powder coating. Strong acids and bleach are also unnecessary and can damage finishes.

Cleaning sliding window tracks

Sliding window tracks collect dust, dead insects, hair and grit, and in the rainy months they can hold water and turn black.

  1. Vacuum loose debris with the crevice tool.
  2. Loosen packed dirt with a dry toothbrush or a flat-head screwdriver wrapped in a cloth.
  3. Spray with warm soapy water and leave for a few minutes.
  4. Scrub with the toothbrush, then wipe out with a cloth pushed along the channel.
  5. Clear the drainage holes with a cotton bud or toothpick so rainwater can escape.
  6. Dry thoroughly. A dry track slides better and resists mould.

Frames, sills and the glass

Wipe frames and sills with a damp cloth, paying attention to the rubber seals, where black mould often appears. Then do the interior glass. Exterior glass on a high floor should only be cleaned where you can reach it safely with your arms inside the window, for example with a long-handled magnetic or angled window tool. For more on glass and frames, see our window cleaning service page.

The window safety check worth doing at the same time

The Building and Construction Authority (BCA) advises homeowners to check and maintain their windows at least once every six months. For casement windows (the kind that swing outward on hinges), that means checking that fasteners are not rusty or loose and cleaning and lubricating the joints and moving parts. BCA also requires aluminium rivets on casement windows to be replaced with stainless steel ones, as corroded aluminium rivets have been a common factor in fallen windows. HDB flats built roughly between 1987 and 1998 originally used aluminium rivets, so owners of those flats should confirm theirs have been replaced.

While you clean, look for:

  • Loose or rusty screws, rivets and hinges
  • A window that drops, sags or does not lock properly
  • Cracked glass or missing stoppers on sliding panes

If anything looks wrong, contact a BCA-approved window contractor. Do not try to repair or remove a casement window yourself.

Fitting it into a bigger clean

Grilles and tracks are a classic deep-clean task, covered with the rest of the home in our room-by-room deep cleaning guide. If your flat is older, our older HDB flat cleaning tips cover other age-related quirks, and grilles on the balcony are dealt with in balcony cleaning in Singapore. Window seals with black spots often go hand in hand with damp curtains; see curtain and blind cleaning.

Cleaning Assistant's cleaners do window interiors, frames, sills, tracks and grilles from inside, plus any exterior glass that can be reached safely. We do not do high-rise exterior work that requires leaning out or rope access.

Frequently asked questions

Can I hose down my window grilles?

Not in a high-rise flat. Water will run down the facade and onto neighbours' windows, and it is hard to control around electrical points. A damp glove or cloth does the job without the mess.

How do I clean the outside of grilles I cannot reach?

If they cannot be reached safely from inside with your arms within the window frame, leave them. Never stand on a ledge or lean out. Rain rinses exterior grilles to some extent, and the inside face is what sheds most dust into the home.

What removes black mould from window seals?

Wipe with a mild bathroom mould cleaner on a cloth, leave for a few minutes, then scrub gently with a toothbrush and wipe dry. Keep the area ventilated and never mix bleach-based products with other cleaners.
