Curtain Cleaning in Singapore: Washing Curtains and Wiping Blinds

Most curtains in Singapore homes can be cleaned at home: check the care label, take them down, remove the hooks, and machine wash on a gentle cycle in cool water, then rehang them while slightly damp so creases drop out. Lined, blackout-coated, velvet or silk curtains are usually dry-clean only. Blinds stay where they are: dust them with a microfibre or vacuum brush, then wipe slats with a damp cloth. Aim to wash curtains every three to six months and dust blinds every couple of weeks.

Why window dressings get dusty and mouldy here

Curtains and blinds sit right where outdoor air enters. They catch road and construction dust, cooking oil drifting from the kitchen and, during haze periods, fine particles. Fabric hanging next to a window that collects condensation, especially in an aircon bedroom, can stay damp along the hem. In humid weeks, that is where grey or black mould spots appear.

Step 1: Check the care label

Label saysWhat it means
Machine wash, cold or 30Safe for the gentle cycle at home
Hand washWash in a tub or the gentle hand-wash cycle
Dry clean onlyTake to a dry cleaner
Do not washUsually blackout coatings, velvets, or bonded linings

Sheer and voile curtains, cotton and most polyester curtains are normally washable. Blackout curtains with a rubbery backing can crack in a machine. If there is no label, test a small corner by hand first.

Step 2: Washing fabric curtains at home

  1. Dust or vacuum first while still hanging, using the brush attachment, top to bottom.
  2. Take them down and remove all hooks, rings and weights.
  3. Shake them outside or over the service yard to get rid of loose dust.
  4. Wash in cool water on a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Do not overload the machine; one or two panels at a time is plenty.
  5. Skip the tumble dryer unless the label allows it, as heat can shrink fabric.
  6. Rehang while slightly damp. The weight helps creases fall out, and a fan in the room speeds drying.

Sheers in particular come out much brighter after washing, since grey dust builds up gradually and is easy to miss.

Step 3: Dealing with mould on curtains

If you see spots of mould near the hem or along the window side:

  • Take the curtain down promptly.
  • Brush off surface spores outdoors.
  • Pre-soak washable fabrics in water with a fabric-safe stain remover or oxygen-based bleach, following the label.
  • Wash as normal and dry completely.
  • For coloured fabrics, avoid chlorine bleach, which can strip colour.

If mould returns quickly, look at the cause: condensation on the window, a damp wall or poor air flow. Our guide to mould on walls and ceilings explains the usual sources and how to tell when it's a leak.

Step 4: Cleaning blinds without taking them down

Venetian and aluminium blinds

  1. Close the slats flat, facing one way.
  2. Dust with a microfibre cloth or vacuum brush, top to bottom.
  3. Turn them the other way and repeat.
  4. For sticky grime, wipe each slat with a cloth dampened in warm water with a drop of dishwashing liquid, then a dry cloth.
  5. A cotton glove or sock worn on the hand lets you clean both sides of a slat at once.

Timber or faux wood blinds

Dust regularly and use only a barely damp cloth. Real wood can warp with too much water.

Roller blinds

Lower the blind fully, vacuum with the brush head, and spot-clean marks with a damp cloth. Many roller blind fabrics are coated, so do not soak them.

Vertical blinds

Dust each vane top to bottom. Some fabric vanes can be removed and hand-washed; check the manufacturer's instructions.

Prevention tips

  • Open curtains during the day to let the window side dry out.
  • Wipe condensation off windows in aircon rooms each morning.
  • Leave a small gap between curtain and glass if condensation is common.
  • Dust blinds before they build up; thick dust in humid air becomes grime.
  • Clean window tracks and seals too; see window grille and track cleaning.

Fitting it into a deep clean

Curtains and blinds are dusted before surfaces and floors in our room-by-room deep cleaning guide, and the ceiling fan should come first of all; see ceiling fan cleaning. If dust triggers allergies in your home, washing curtains more often is one of the simplest steps in allergy-friendly home cleaning.

During a deep clean, Cleaning Assistant's cleaners can dust and wipe blinds and take down washable curtains for laundering in your machine, using your detergent. Dry-clean-only curtains are best sent to a dry cleaner.

Frequently asked questions

Can I wash blackout curtains in the washing machine?

Some can, on a cold, gentle cycle, but many have a coating that cracks or peels with machine washing. Check the label, and if unsure, vacuum and spot-clean them instead.

How do I clean blinds that are greasy from the kitchen?

Wipe each slat with warm water and a little dishwashing liquid, or a mild degreaser on a cloth for heavy grime. Dry each slat afterwards to avoid streaks and water spots.

What causes black spots on curtains near the window?

Usually mould growing where condensation or rain dampens the fabric. Wash the curtains, dry them fully, and reduce moisture at the window by wiping condensation and improving ventilation.
