Sofa Cleaning in Singapore: How to Clean a Fabric Sofa at Home
3 October 20265 min read
Before cleaning a fabric sofa, find the care tag and look for a code: W means water-based cleaners are fine, S means solvent-based cleaners only, WS means either, and X means vacuum only. Then the routine is simple: vacuum thoroughly, blot stains from the outside in with the right cleaner, use as little moisture as possible, and dry fast with a fan. Do this and most everyday sofa marks come out without hiring a specialist.
Step 1: Read the cleaning code
The tag is usually under a seat cushion or on the sofa base. These are the standard upholstery codes:
| Code | Meaning | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| W | Water-based cleaning | Mild dishwashing liquid in water, upholstery shampoo |
| S | Solvent only | Dry-cleaning solvent or upholstery solvent cleaner; no water |
| WS or SW | Water or solvent | Either, mildest first |
| X | Vacuum or brush only | No liquids; call a professional for stains |
If there is no tag, treat it as an S or X sofa until you have tested a hidden patch, such as the back or underside.
Step 2: Vacuum properly
Dust, crumbs, pet hair and skin flakes sink into upholstery. Vacuuming before any wet cleaning stops you turning that into mud.
- Remove all cushions and vacuum the deck underneath and the crevices.
- Use the upholstery brush on arms, back and the cushions on all sides.
- Use the crevice tool along seams and piping.
- A rubber glove or lint roller is handy for pet hair.
In Singapore homes with windows open most of the day, a fortnightly vacuum keeps dust from settling deep into the fibres.
Step 3: Spot-clean stains
Golden rules for any stain: blot, do not rub; work from the edges inward; use the least amount of liquid; and test first.
For W and WS sofas
Mix a few drops of dishwashing liquid in a cup of lukewarm water. Dab onto a white microfibre cloth, blot the stain, then blot with a cloth dampened in plain water to rinse, and finally press with a dry towel.
Common stains
- Coffee and tea: blot, then use the detergent mix. A little white vinegar diluted in water can help on W fabrics; test first.
- Grease and curry: sprinkle baking soda or cornflour to absorb the oil, leave 15 minutes, brush off, then treat with the detergent mix. Turmeric-based curries can leave a yellow tint that may need an upholstery specialist.
- Ink: dab with a little rubbing alcohol on a cotton bud (S and WS fabrics, test first). Do not spread it.
- Food and milk: cool water only first, since heat can set protein stains.
- Pet accidents: blot up as much as possible, then use an enzyme cleaner designed for upholstery, following its label.
For S sofas
Use a solvent-based upholstery cleaner only, in a well-ventilated room, following the product label. No water.
Step 4: Deal with smells
- Sprinkle baking soda across the seat and back, leave for a few hours or overnight, then vacuum thoroughly.
- Wash removable cushion covers only if the label permits; some covers shrink or fade.
- Air the room. Humid, closed rooms make upholstery smell musty.
For wider odour problems around the home, our guide on how smell affects a clean home has more ideas.
Step 5: Dry it fast
Damp upholstery in Singapore's humidity can develop a musty smell or watermarks. After any wet cleaning:
- Point a fan at the cleaned area.
- Run the aircon or open windows on a dry day.
- Keep people and pets off until it feels completely dry.
- If a watermark ring appears, lightly dampen the whole panel evenly and dry it again.
A brief note on leather sofas
Leather needs different care. Dust it with a dry microfibre, wipe with a cloth barely dampened with water or a pH-balanced leather cleaner, and condition it every few months so it does not crack. Avoid baby wipes, which can leave residue, and keep leather out of direct sun. In humid weather, leather can develop mould spots if a room stays shut up for weeks; wipe them off promptly with a leather cleaner and improve ventilation.
How often to clean your sofa
| Task | Frequency |
|---|---|
| Vacuum | Weekly to fortnightly |
| Spot-clean | As spills happen |
| Baking soda refresh | Every 1 to 3 months |
| Deep clean or professional extraction | Every 12 to 18 months, or sooner with pets and kids |
When to call an upholstery specialist
- X-coded fabrics with stains
- Velvet, silk or delicate weaves
- Large stains, mould inside cushions or heavy pet odour
- Antique or high-value pieces
Hot water extraction and steam cleaning need specialised machines and experience.
Where it fits
Sofa vacuuming and spot-cleaning are part of the living room section in our room-by-room deep cleaning guide. Pet owners can find more in our pet-friendly cleaning guide, and the same dust-reduction approach applies to the bedroom in mattress cleaning.
Cleaning Assistant's cleaners vacuum sofas and spot-clean with the products you provide, so you choose what goes on the fabric your family sits on. Extraction or steam cleaning of upholstery is a specialist job outside our scope.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a carpet cleaner on my sofa?
Only if the sofa is W or WS coded and the cleaner is labelled safe for upholstery. Carpet cleaners can be too strong or too wet for sofa fabric, so test a hidden area first.
How do I remove water stains from a fabric sofa?
Water stains are often minerals or dirt that moved to the edge as the fabric dried. Lightly dampen the whole panel evenly with distilled water on a cloth, blot, then dry quickly with a fan so it dries uniformly.
Is it safe to steam clean a fabric sofa at home?
Only on fabrics that tolerate water and heat, usually W coded, and only if the manufacturer allows it. Steam can shrink some fabrics or leave cushions damp inside, which is risky in a humid climate.
