The Most-Missed Cleaning Spots in Singapore Homes, From Our Cleaners

Quick answer: The cleaning spots our cleaners most often find missed in Singapore homes are under appliances, behind the toilet bowl, the sink, and returning cleaning supplies to their original spots afterwards. The first three hide dust, splashes and grime where a quick wipe never reaches; the fourth is a habit that leaves a freshly cleaned home looking cluttered. Each one takes only a few extra minutes once you know to look for it.

These four come from what our cleaners see when they walk into homes across Singapore, not from a survey or a generic list. They are the jobs that get skipped week after week, usually because they are awkward, out of sight, or simply forgotten when people are rushing. Below is why each one gets missed, how to fix it, and how often it needs doing.

This article covers the whole home. If you only care about the bathroom, our guide to the toilet spots people always miss goes deeper into rims, hinges and grout.

What are the most-missed cleaning spots, according to our cleaners?

1. Under appliances

Fridges, washing machines, standing fans, dehumidifiers, rice cookers on the counter and the microwave all hide a strip of floor or worktop that rarely sees a cloth. In a Singapore flat with windows open for ventilation, fine dust blows in daily, and it settles in exactly these places. In the kitchen, it mixes with cooking oil from wok frying and turns into a sticky grey film.

How to fix it:

  • For low-clearance gaps under the fridge or washing machine, use a slim microfibre duster or a flat mop head pushed in at floor level. Follow with a damp cloth.
  • Lift small countertop appliances (kettle, toaster, rice cooker, air fryer) and wipe the worktop underneath, not just around them. Crumbs here attract ants and cockroaches.
  • Check under the washing machine in the service yard for standing water. Damp in that corner is a common start point for mould.
  • If an appliance is on wheels or sliders, pull it out once a month and clean the floor and the back of the unit.

Never tilt a fridge or washing machine on your own; ask for help or leave it to a deep clean. Our service yard and laundry area guide covers the washing machine corner in more detail.

2. Behind the toilet bowl

The front and the seat get cleaned. The narrow gap behind the bowl, around the base and the back of the pedestal does not. It collects dust, hair and splashes, and in a humid bathroom it starts to smell long before it looks dirty.

How to fix it:

  • Keep one cloth or thin brush only for this area so it never travels to the sink.
  • Spray a bathroom disinfectant, leave it for the dwell time on the label, then wipe from top to bottom so dirt moves down and out.
  • Get right down to where the bowl meets the floor. That seam is where the smell usually comes from.
  • Rinse the cloth, wipe again with water, and leave the floor to dry with the window open or exhaust fan running.

Use one product at a time here. Toilet areas are where people most often end up mixing bleach with an acidic cleaner, which is dangerous. Our guide to cleaning products you should never mix explains which combinations to avoid.

3. The sink

This one surprises people because the sink is used, and rinsed, every day. That is exactly the problem: a rinse makes it look clean, so it rarely gets a proper scrub. Our cleaners find build-up in kitchen and bathroom sinks alike.

Where the grime hides:

  • The tap base and the back edge where water pools and leaves scale.
  • The overflow hole in bathroom basins, which collects soap and toothpaste.
  • The plughole and strainer, where food bits or hair start to smell in our heat.
  • Under the rim of undermount kitchen sinks, where grease collects out of sight.

How to fix it: scrub the basin with a non-scratch sponge and your usual cleaner, use an old toothbrush on the tap base and overflow, and lift out the strainer to clean it. Dry the tap with a cloth afterwards, which cuts down on hard-water marks. For stubborn white crust, see our guide on removing hard water stains from taps and glass.

4. Returning cleaning supplies to their original spots

This isn't a dirt problem, but it is one of the first things people notice. The mop is left leaning in the service yard, the spray bottle stays on the bathroom counter, the cloths end up by the sink. The home is cleaner, but it doesn't feel finished, and next time nobody can find the bleach.

How to fix it:

  • Give every cleaning item a fixed spot: a caddy under the sink, a hook for the mop, a shelf in the service yard.
  • Keep products that belong to one room (bathroom cleaner, toilet brush) in that room.
  • Make putting everything away the last step of every clean, not something to do "later".
  • Rinse and wring out mops and cloths before storing them, so they dry instead of turning musty.
  • If you use a cleaner, show them where everything lives on the first visit. Our cleaner briefing template has a section for this.

This is also where having the same cleaner each time helps. They learn where your supplies live after a few visits. On recurring plans we do our best to send the same person, which is one reason customers on weekly or fortnightly plans tend to notice this less.

Also worth checking around the house

These are general spots many homes overlook. They are not part of the list above from our cleaners, but they are worth a look on your next deep clean:

  • Light switches, door handles and remote controls
  • The top of the fridge and kitchen cabinets
  • Window tracks and grilles, which collect black dust
  • The exhaust fan cover in the bathroom (see our guide to cleaning a bathroom exhaust fan safely)
  • Skirting boards and the tops of door frames

Why these spots matter more in Singapore

High humidity means damp corners stay damp, and dust sticks to surfaces rather than sitting loose. Spots that would only get dusty in a drier climate grow mould or smell here. Cleaning the hidden areas regularly keeps small jobs small. Leave them for months and they become a deep-clean task.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most commonly missed cleaning spot in a home?

From what our cleaners see, it is a tie between under appliances and behind the toilet bowl. Both are out of sight and awkward to reach, so they get skipped even in homes that are otherwise cleaned well.

Will a cleaner clean under my fridge and washing machine?

A cleaner will clean underneath as far as can be reached with a duster or flat mop, and wipe around and on top of the unit. Moving heavy appliances is best kept for a deep clean or done with a second person, to protect both the appliance and the floor.

How do I stop my sink from smelling?

Clean the strainer and plughole at least weekly, and pour hot (not boiling) water down the drain after cleaning to flush out loosened grime. In bathroom basins, scrub the overflow hole too, because trapped soap there starts to smell in humid weather.

How can I make sure items are put back after cleaning?

Take a photo of busy surfaces before you start and give daily items a fixed place to live. If someone else cleans for you, list the items that must go back exactly as they were.

Want these spots handled every visit without having to ask? A weekly or fortnightly plan is $23/hr instead of $26/hr on demand, and we do our best to send the same cleaner so your home's quirks get remembered. Set up a recurring clean or WhatsApp +65 8166 0891.
