Service Yard Cleaning: How to Clean the HDB Laundry Area Properly
8 October 20266 min read
Service yard cleaning comes down to five jobs: clear the floor, flush and scrub the floor trap, clean around and under the washing machine, wipe the laundry racks and poles, and deal with the window or grille. Most service yards only need a quick sweep weekly and a proper scrub once a month, but because the space is small and functional, it tends to get skipped until it smells.
In most HDB flats, the service yard sits next to the kitchen and doubles as the laundry room, drying area and storage space for everything from the mop bucket to spare rice. That mix of water, detergent, lint and clutter is why it gets grimy faster than people expect.
What makes service yards dirty so quickly
- Detergent and fabric softener drips build up into a sticky film on the floor and machine top.
- Lint and hair from laundry collect in corners and get washed into the floor trap.
- Rain and dust blow in through the open window or grille, especially in high-floor units.
- Stagnant water sits in the floor trap, under the machine and in pails, which also matters for dengue.
- Clutter like stacked pails, old boxes and cleaning tools traps dust and blocks airflow.
What you'll need
You provide your own supplies when you clean, and the list here is short:
- A stiff deck brush or old scrubbing brush
- A bucket, a mop and microfibre cloths
- Dishwashing liquid or an all-purpose cleaner
- A toothbrush or narrow brush for the floor trap grating
- Gloves, and a torch for looking under the washing machine

A monthly service yard clean, in order
Work from high to low and from the back of the space towards the door, so you aren't walking over wet areas.
- Clear the floor. Move pails, laundry baskets, the mop and anything stored on the floor into the kitchen. This is a good moment to throw out empty bottles and broken pegs.
- Dust the high points. Wipe the top of the window frame, any wall-mounted shelves, the water heater casing if you have one, and the laundry pole holders.
- Wipe the laundry racks or poles. Ceiling-mounted racks and bamboo pole holders collect dust and grime that transfers onto clean clothes. Lower the rack if it has a pulley and wipe each bar with a damp cloth.
- Clean the window or grille. Wipe the interior of the window and the frame and track. Grilles collect black dust; our window grille cleaning guide covers the technique.
- Clean the washing machine exterior. Wipe the top, sides and control panel to remove detergent drips. If you can safely tilt or slide the machine, clean the floor beneath it, where lint and damp gather.
- Scrub the floor. Wet the floor, apply diluted cleaner, and scrub with the deck brush, paying attention to the edges where the floor meets the wall.
- Clean the floor trap. Lift the grating, remove hair and lint by hand with gloves, scrub the grating and the visible part of the trap, then flush with clean water.
- Rinse and dry. Push the water into the trap, then leave the window open to air-dry. Put things back only when the floor is dry.
A typical HDB service yard takes 30 to 45 minutes to clean this way, longer if the floor trap has been neglected.
The floor trap deserves extra attention
A smelly service yard is very often a floor trap problem. The trap holds a small amount of water that blocks sewer smells. If it dries out because the yard isn't used for a while, smells come back up; if it clogs with lint, water pools and starts to smell on its own.
- Pour water into it once a week if you rarely wash the floor, to keep the seal topped up.
- Clear lint after heavy laundry days. Washing machine outflow carries more lint than you'd think.
- Avoid pouring cooking oil or grease into it from the kitchen.
If smells persist after cleaning, our guide on how smell affects a clean home walks through other likely sources.
Dengue checks while you're there
NEA advises households to do the B-L-O-C-K steps at least once a week, and service yards often have several of the risk points: pails left upright, mop buckets with water in the bottom, plant saucers and the floor trap itself. Turn pails over, empty the mop bucket after use and keep the trap flowing. Our dengue prevention cleaning guide has the full routine, and NEA's own Stop Dengue page lists the official steps.
How often to clean each part
| Task | How often |
|---|---|
| Sweep and quick mop | Weekly |
| Turn over pails, empty mop bucket | After each use |
| Top up floor trap with water | Weekly if unused |
| Wipe washing machine exterior | Weekly |
| Scrub floor and floor trap | Monthly |
| Wipe laundry racks and poles | Monthly |
| Clean under the washing machine | Every few months |
| Clear clutter and reorganise | Every few months |
Safety and neighbourliness
Service yards open to the outside of the block, so take care not to let anything fall from the window, including pegs, cloths and items balanced on the ledge. Never lean out to clean the exterior of the window if it isn't safely reachable from inside. When hosing the floor, keep water away from power points and the washing machine's plug.
Making it part of a routine clean
The service yard is a natural add-on to kitchen cleaning, and including it in a recurring session keeps it from becoming a weekend job. If you have a part-time cleaner, mention it when you book so time is set aside. Cleaning Assistant's cleaners can also clean washing machine exteriors and the surrounding floor; for the inside of the machine, see our washing machine cleaning guide. It is also a standard stop in a deep clean.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my service yard smell like drains?
Usually the floor trap has either dried out or clogged. Pour a bucket of water into it, clear any lint or hair, and scrub the grating. If the smell continues, check the washing machine outlet hose connection.
Can I use bleach on the service yard floor?
Diluted bleach is fine on most ceramic tiles if the space is well ventilated, but never mix it with other cleaners. Rinse well afterwards, and keep it away from metal grilles and the washing machine finish.
How do I clean behind a washing machine without moving it?
Use a long, flat microfibre duster or a cloth wrapped around a ruler to pull lint out from the sides and back. If the machine is on a stand with wheels, sliding it out every few months gives a much better result.
Should the service yard window be left open?
Leaving it open helps laundry dry and reduces damp, but close it during heavy rain or haze. A grille or screen keeps birds and debris out when it is open.
