New Year Reset: A 30-Day Declutter and Cleaning Challenge for 2027
22 October 20267 min read
Quick answer: A 30-day cleaning challenge gives you one small declutter or cleaning task each day, about 15 minutes on weekdays and 45 to 60 minutes at weekends. Start on Friday 1 January 2027 and work through the table below, and by 30 January your home will be decluttered and largely clean, a week before Chinese New Year on 6 February.
Big New Year resolutions fail because they ask for a whole weekend at once. This challenge does the opposite: small daily tasks that build on each other, scheduled around the January 2027 calendar so the heavier jobs land on weekends. Copy the table, stick it on the fridge and tick off each day.
How does the 30-day challenge work?
- Weekdays: about 15 minutes. One drawer, one shelf, one surface. Set a timer and stop when it rings.
- Weekends: 45 to 60 minutes. The bigger jobs that need time and a bit of mess.
- Declutter first, clean second. The first two weeks focus on clearing things out; the second half on cleaning what's left.
- Miss a day? Skip it. Don't double up. The aim is a habit, not a perfect record.
You'll need a few basics: bin bags, a donation box, microfibre cloths, an all-purpose cleaner, a glass cleaner and a bathroom cleaner. Our home cleaning supplies shopping list covers the rest.

Why does decluttering come first?
Every item you get rid of is one less thing to dust, lift and clean around for the rest of the year. Clearing surfaces in week one also makes the cleaning tasks in weeks three and four much faster. If you're short on storage, our guide on how to organise a cupboard helps with what's left.
Tips for sticking with the challenge
- Same time every day. Attach the task to something you already do, like after dinner or before your evening shower.
- Share it out. Give each family member a day or two. Children can handle shoes, toys and paper sorting.
- Keep a donation box by the door so items actually leave the house.
- Don't buy storage first. Declutter before you buy boxes, or you'll end up organising things you don't need.
- Photograph the before. On a slow day, looking back at day one helps.
How does this fit with Chinese New Year 2027?
The challenge finishes on Saturday 30 January, a week before Chinese New Year on Saturday 6 February 2027. That leaves the first days of February for a final clean, festive food shopping and the reunion dinner on Friday 5 February. For a dated countdown focused purely on the festival, see our Chinese New Year 2027 cleaning timeline.
If any of the heavy days are too much, the bathroom deep clean, the kitchen and the floors are the ones most worth handing to a cleaner. Our deep cleaning guide explains what a full reset covers, and our guide to home cleaning services in Singapore shows what regular help includes.
How do you keep it up in February and beyond?
The hard part isn't the 30 days; it's March. Once the home is decluttered, the simplest way to keep it that way is a routine that doesn't depend on willpower:
- Keep the 15-minute weekday habit for tidying and quick wipes.
- Use a weekly cleaning schedule for your HDB flat to spread the routine across the week.
- Hand the heavier weekly or fortnightly jobs, such as bathrooms, kitchen and floors, to a regular cleaner.
A weekly or fortnightly plan costs $23/hr rather than $26/hr for on-demand bookings, and we do our best to send the same cleaner each visit. Because the home never slides back into clutter, sessions usually stay within a typical 3-hour visit. For more on how often makes sense, see weekly vs fortnightly cleaning.
Frequently asked questions
What is a 30-day cleaning challenge?
It is a plan of one small cleaning or decluttering task a day for a month. Short daily tasks are easier to stick to than one big weekend clean, and they build a lasting habit.
Can I start the challenge later than 1 January?
Yes. Just start at day one on any date and move the heavier tasks to whichever days fall on your weekends. If you're aiming to finish before Chinese New Year on 6 February 2027, start by early January.
What if I miss a day?
Skip it and carry on with the next day's task. Doubling up tends to make people give up. You can return to missed tasks at the end.
Should I declutter or clean first?
Declutter first. Fewer items means faster cleaning, and you won't waste time scrubbing shelves you're about to empty.
Made it to day 30? Keep the result with a weekly or fortnightly clean at $23/hr, with priority scheduling before Chinese New Year and our best effort to send the same cleaner each time. Book your regular clean or WhatsApp +65 8166 0891.
