Weekly vs Fortnightly Cleaning: How Often Do You Really Need a Cleaner?

5 October 20266 min read

Looking for flexible home help? See our complete guide to Part Time Cleaning in Singapore.

Weekly cleaning suits homes with young children, pets, heavy cooking or more than three people. Fortnightly cleaning suits singles, couples and small households who tidy as they go. If you are unsure, start fortnightly and switch to weekly if the home feels grubby by day ten. Both are billed at our recurring rate of $23/hr.

The rest of this guide helps you decide which camp you fall into, and what each schedule realistically keeps under control in a Singapore home.

Why the answer is different in Singapore

Our climate changes the maths. High humidity means bathrooms stay damp, and mould can start showing in grout and silicone within a couple of weeks if nobody scrubs it. Dust blows in through louvred windows and open service yards, and in many estates there is construction or roadwork nearby. Kitchens that see regular wok cooking build up a film of grease on the hob, splashback and cooker hood exterior faster than most people expect.

None of this means everyone needs weekly cleaning. It means the gap between visits matters more here than in a cool, dry city.

The quick decision guide

Go through these questions. If you answer yes to two or more, weekly is likely worth it.

  1. Do you have children under about six at home?
  2. Do you have a dog or cat that sheds?
  3. Do you cook at home most days, especially stir-frying or deep-frying?
  4. Are there four or more people living in the home?
  5. Does anyone in the home have dust allergies or asthma?
  6. Do you work from home, so the flat is in use all day?
  7. Do you host guests often?

If you answered yes to none or one, fortnightly will probably keep you comfortable, as long as you do light tidying in between.

By household type

Single professional or couple, out at work all day

Usually fortnightly. The home is empty most of the day, there is less cooking and fewer people creating mess. A fortnightly clean resets the bathrooms and floors, and a quick wipe of the kitchen counters in between is enough.

Young family with toddlers

Usually weekly. Food on the floor, fingerprints on glass, more laundry, more bathroom use. Floors in particular matter when small children crawl and play on them. Our guide to cleaning kids' toys and playrooms covers the bits a weekly clean does not reach.

Household with pets

Weekly in most cases. Fur collects under beds and sofas and on rugs within days. With a shedding dog, fortnightly visits often mean the first hour of each session is just vacuuming. More on this in our pet-friendly cleaning guide.

Flatmates sharing a flat

Fortnightly often works, if everyone keeps their own room tidy and the shared kitchen and bathroom get the cleaner's attention. Agreeing the split of cost and scope upfront avoids arguments. See our flat-sharing cleaning rules.

Multi-generation household

Usually weekly. More people, more cooking and more bathroom use. If an elderly family member is at home, keeping floors clear and bathrooms free of slippery residue is a safety issue as much as a cleanliness one.

Work-from-home household

Leaning weekly. A flat used all day collects more dust, crumbs and dishes, and you notice it more because you are sitting in it.

What it costs

Both schedules are billed at $23/hr. The difference is how many visits you pay for and how long each one runs.

As a rough illustration for a 4-room HDB flat (estimates only, since every home differs):

  • Weekly: around 3 hours a visit, about 4.3 visits a month on average, roughly $297 a month
  • Fortnightly: around 3.5 hours a visit, two visits a month, roughly $161 a month

Fortnightly sessions often run a bit longer because there is more build-up to deal with, so you are not saving quite half. For more examples, see part-time cleaning cost in Singapore, and for estimates by flat type, how many hours of cleaning your home needs.

Making either schedule work better

  • Do a ten-minute daily reset. Dishes washed, counters wiped, things put back. It makes the cleaner's time go much further.
  • Squeegee the shower glass and run the bathroom fan. This alone slows down mould between visits.
  • Book a periodic deep clean. Neither schedule reaches inside the oven, behind heavy furniture or the tops of high cabinets. A deep clean a few times a year, often before Chinese New Year, covers what regular visits do not. Our deep cleaning guide explains what that involves.
  • Keep the same day and time. A fixed slot makes it easier for us to do our best to send the same cleaner each visit, and a cleaner who knows your home works faster.

You can switch between weekly and fortnightly as life changes. A new baby, a new pet or a flatmate moving out are all good reasons to revisit the schedule. Our part-time cleaning page explains how recurring plans work.

Frequently asked questions

Is fortnightly cleaning enough for an HDB flat?

For a small household that tidies daily, yes. Fortnightly cleaning keeps bathrooms, floors and the kitchen in good shape for most couples and singles. Households with children, pets or daily cooking usually find weekly visits more comfortable.

Is weekly cleaning more expensive per hour?

No. Weekly and fortnightly plans are both billed at our recurring rate of $23/hr. Weekly costs more per month because there are more visits, but each visit tends to be shorter.

Can I switch from fortnightly to weekly later?

Yes. There are no contracts, so you can change the frequency when your needs change. Just let us know in advance so we can arrange the schedule.

What about monthly cleaning?

Monthly visits are closer to a mini deep clean each time, as a month of humidity and dust adds up. Many households find fortnightly the minimum that keeps the home feeling consistently clean.

Still undecided? Start with a trial clean at $20/hr and see how your home feels after one and two weeks, or WhatsApp +65 8166 0891 and tell us about your household.
