Pets make a house a home — and a lot more work to keep clean. Between shed fur, dander, muddy paws and the occasional accident, a home with cats or dogs needs a slightly different cleaning routine. Here's how we approach pet-friendly cleaning across the Singapore homes we look after.
What makes cleaning a home with pets different?
Three things: fur and dander that settle into floors, sofas and fabrics; odours that build up in soft furnishings and litter or bedding areas; and safety — because pets lick their paws and lie on the floor, so whatever you clean with matters. A good pet-friendly clean tackles all three without exposing your animals to anything harsh.
Choose pet-safe cleaning products
This is the most important part. Pets are far more sensitive than we are to strong chemicals — they walk on cleaned floors then groom their paws. Because our customers provide their own cleaning supplies, you stay in complete control of exactly what's used around your animals. For pet homes we'd suggest:
- Mild, low-fragrance floor cleaners rather than heavily scented or strong disinfectants
- Avoiding products containing high concentrations of ammonia (the smell can encourage cats to re-mark) or undiluted bleach on floors pets use
- Keeping any cleaning products stored well out of reach
Tell your cleaner which products you'd like used and which rooms your pets favour, so the session is tailored around them.
The spots that need extra attention
In pet households, these areas collect the most and get missed the most:
- Floors and skirting – fur gathers along edges and under furniture; frequent vacuuming and mopping is the single biggest win
- Sofas and soft furnishings – fur and dander work deep into upholstery; vacuum with an upholstery tool and wash covers regularly
- Rugs and carpets – trap the most dander and odour of anything in the home
- Pet beds and blankets – wash these often; they're a major odour source
- Feeding and litter areas – wipe the floor and walls around food bowls and litter trays, where splashes and dust build up
- Curtains and low fabrics – anything at pet height collects fur and smell
Managing fur and dander
Fur is relentless, but a routine keeps it under control:
- Vacuum more often than you think – two to three times a week in a shedding household, more during moulting season
- Damp-wipe, don't dry-dust – a dry cloth just lifts dander into the air; a damp microfibre cloth traps it
- Do the soft surfaces – sofas, cushions and beds hold more fur than floors do
- Change aircon and air purifier filters more frequently – pet dander clogs them faster (see our spring cleaning guide for why filters matter so much)
Controlling dander isn't just tidiness — it directly helps anyone in the home with allergies or asthma.
Dealing with pet odours the right way
The trick with pet smell is to remove the source, not mask it with air freshener:
- Wash pet bedding, blankets and soft toys regularly
- Clean litter trays and the area around them frequently
- Treat accidents promptly — blot, clean, and let the spot dry fully so it doesn't set in
- Keep the home well ventilated; in Singapore's humidity, trapped moisture makes odours worse
We go deeper on this in our guide to why smell makes such a difference to how clean a home feels.
Keeping a pet home clean between cleans
A few small habits stop fur and mess from ever piling up:
- Wipe paws at the door after walks
- Keep a lint roller and handheld vacuum handy for quick touch-ups
- Brush your pet regularly (ideally outdoors or over an easy-to-clean floor) to catch fur before it spreads
- Wash food and water bowls daily
