Days 1 to 7: clean for your defects check
The first week is about visibility, not sparkle. A layer of construction dust hides cracked tiles, scratched glass and gaps in the sealant. A light clean helps you photograph and report defects before renovation starts, which matters because defects found after renovation can be harder to attribute to the original construction.
Keep this stage short. Anything you scrub now will be covered in dust once renovation begins. Avoid acid cleaners or blades on stains until you know whether they are defects.
Renovation weeks: protect, do not clean
While your contractor is working, cleaning is wasted effort. Use the time to:
- Ask the contractor to protect floors, window frames and new cabinets
- Agree who removes debris, protective film and stickers at the end
- Keep a list of new finishes, such as vinyl, quartz or sintered stone, so you know which products to use later

The week renovation ends: the big clean
This is the clean that matters most. Renovation dust is fine enough to settle inside every cabinet, on top of door frames and inside light fittings, and it keeps reappearing for weeks unless it is removed from top to bottom.
