Washing Machine Cleaning: How to Clean Front-Load and Top-Load Machines
1 October 20266 min read
To clean a washing machine, you need to deal with four places: the rubber door seal, the detergent drawer, the drum, and the drain filter. Run a hot empty cycle with a washing machine cleaner once a month, wipe the seal and drawer after that cycle, and clear the filter every one to three months. If your laundry comes out smelling sour or you can see black spots on the rubber, it's overdue.
Singapore's humidity makes this more urgent than in drier climates. A machine that stays damp inside between washes, especially a front-loader with the door shut, grows mould and bacterial film quickly.
Signs your washing machine needs cleaning
- Clean clothes smell musty or sour
- Black or grey spots on the door seal
- Slimy residue in the detergent drawer
- Grey flakes or specks on freshly washed clothes
- Water draining slowly or the machine showing a drain error
- A damp, stale smell when you open the door
Front-load vs top-load: where the dirt hides
| Front-load | Top-load | |
|---|---|---|
| Main problem area | Rubber door gasket | Underside of the rim and agitator |
| Mould risk | High, because water sits in the seal | Moderate |
| Detergent buildup | Drawer and its housing | Dispenser cups and fabric softener cup |
| Filter location | Usually behind a small panel at the bottom front | Often a lint filter inside the drum, or a pump filter under the machine |
| Smell cause | Trapped water in seal and drum | Scum under the drum and rim |
Always check your manual, because filter location and drum-clean settings vary by model.
How to clean a front-load washing machine
1. The door seal
Pull back the folds of the rubber gasket and look inside. You'll often find hair, coins, lint and black mould. Wipe it out with a cloth and warm soapy water. For mould spots, use a mould cleaner or diluted bleach on a cloth, leave a few minutes, and wipe off. Don't let bleach sit on the rubber for long, as it can degrade it. Dry the folds with a clean towel.
2. The detergent drawer
Most drawers pull fully out when you press a release tab. Soak the drawer in warm water for 15 minutes, then scrub the compartments with an old toothbrush. Clean the cavity it sits in too; mould often grows on the roof of that housing, which you only see with a torch.
3. The drum-clean cycle
Run an empty cycle on the hottest setting or the "tub clean" programme. Add a washing machine cleaner following its instructions. Avoid adding several products at once, and never combine bleach with vinegar.
4. The drain filter
Put a towel and a shallow tray down, because water will come out. Open the small panel at the bottom front, drain the emergency hose if there is one, then unscrew the filter slowly. Remove lint, hair and any small items, rinse it, and screw it back firmly. A loose filter will leak.
5. Leave the door open
After each wash, leave the door and drawer ajar so the inside dries. This single habit prevents most front-loader smells.
How to clean a top-load washing machine
- Fill and soak. Start a hot cycle with washing machine cleaner, let the drum fill, then pause it for an hour so the cleaner can soak. Then let the cycle finish.
- Scrub the rim. Wipe under the top rim of the drum and around the lid hinge, where scum gathers out of sight.
- Clean the agitator or pulsator. Wipe the visible surfaces. Some agitators lift out for cleaning; check your manual before forcing anything.
- Empty the lint filter. Many top-loaders have a mesh pouch clipped inside the drum. Turn it inside out and rinse.
- Wipe the lid and controls. Detergent drips around the lid hold dust.
How often to clean
- After each wash: leave door or lid open, remove wet laundry promptly
- Weekly: wipe the door seal dry
- Monthly: drum-clean cycle, clean detergent drawer
- Every one to three months: drain or lint filter, more often if you wash pet bedding
Common mistakes
- Using too much detergent. Excess doesn't rinse out and becomes the residue mould feeds on. Follow the dose for your water level and load.
- Leaving wet clothes in the drum. Even a few hours in Singapore's heat is enough for a sour smell.
- Only washing on cold or quick cycles. Running a warm or hot wash now and then helps keep buildup down.
- Ignoring the outside. The top and sides collect detergent drips, which is where the service yard gets grimy.
Where professional help fits
A full internal service, with the drum removed to clean behind it, is technician work. Regular cleaning of the parts you can reach, though, takes 30 minutes and keeps most machines smelling fine. If you'd like it done as part of a bigger session, a cleaner can wipe the exterior, door seal and drawer during a deep clean, using the products you supply. Pair it with the fridge cleaning guide and the kitchen deep cleaning guide for a full appliance refresh before the festive season.
Frequently asked questions
Can I clean a washing machine with vinegar and baking soda?
They can help with light odours, but a purpose-made washing machine cleaner usually works better on built-up residue. Never use vinegar in the same cycle as bleach, and check your manual, as some manufacturers advise against frequent vinegar use on rubber parts.
Why do my towels smell even after washing?
The usual causes are too much detergent, a mouldy door seal, or towels left in the drum after the cycle ends. Clean the machine, cut back on detergent and hang towels out promptly.
How do I get rid of black mould on the rubber seal?
Wipe the folds with a mould cleaner or diluted bleach, leave it for a few minutes, then rinse and dry. If the mould has stained deep into the rubber, the gasket may need replacing by a technician.
Is the drain filter the same as the lint filter?
On many front-loaders the drain filter at the bottom front is where lint and small items collect. Top-loaders often have a separate lint pouch inside the drum. Your manual will show which your machine has.
