Vinyl Floor Cleaning in Singapore: How to Clean Vinyl and SPC Safely

The safe way to clean vinyl or SPC flooring is to vacuum or dry-mop first, then mop with a mild, pH-neutral floor cleaner on a mop that's damp, not wet, and let the floor dry quickly. Avoid soaking the floor, steam mops, bleach and solvent-based products, which can weaken the joints, dull the wear layer or discolour the surface. Done this way, vinyl is one of the easiest floors to keep clean.

Vinyl and SPC (stone plastic composite) planks have become a popular choice in Singapore renovations, especially in BTO and resale HDB flats, because they're affordable, quick to install over existing tiles and look like timber. They're water-resistant on the surface, but that doesn't mean they like being flooded.

Understanding your floor

Not all vinyl is the same, and it helps to know what you have.

TypeWhat it isKey cleaning concern
SPC click planksRigid core of limestone and PVC with a printed layer and wear layerWater seeping into joints and edges
LVT (luxury vinyl tile)Flexible vinyl planks, glued or clickSolvents softening the surface, glue lifting at edges

Ask your contractor or check your renovation documents for the brand, then look up the manufacturer's care guide. Some warranties specify which cleaners not to use.

The routine that works

Daily or every other day

Sweep, dry-mop or vacuum with a hard-floor setting. Grit is the main thing that wears down the protective top layer, leaving dull, scratched paths in high-traffic areas like the corridor and kitchen.

Weekly

  1. Remove loose dirt first by vacuuming or dry-mopping.
  2. Mix a mild cleaner. A pH-neutral floor cleaner diluted as directed, or a few drops of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of warm water.
  3. Wring the mop well. It should feel only damp to the touch. A flat microfibre mop is ideal because it holds little water.
  4. Mop along the length of the planks, not across them, so you're not pushing water into the joints.
  5. Change the water when it gets cloudy.
  6. Let the floor dry. Open windows or turn on a fan. In humid weather, a quick pass with a dry mop helps.

What to avoid

  • Steam mops. Heat and moisture can soften adhesives and force steam into click joints.
  • Bleach and ammonia. These can discolour the printed layer over time.
  • Solvents and acetone, including nail polish remover, except on a tiny spot as a last resort and only if the manufacturer allows it.
  • Wax or polish products meant for timber or stone. They leave a sticky, cloudy build-up.
  • Abrasive pads and powders, which scratch the wear layer.
  • Rubber-backed mats. Some can react with vinyl and leave yellow stains. Look for mats labelled vinyl-safe.
  • Leaving puddles. Spills on the surface won't hurt, but water left sitting on joints, especially near the kitchen sink or bathroom door, can work its way underneath.

Spot-cleaning common marks

  • Black scuff marks: rub gently with a tennis ball, a soft eraser or a bit of baking soda on a damp cloth.
  • Grease in the kitchen: a drop of dishwashing liquid in warm water on a microfibre cloth, then wipe with clean water.
  • Ink or marker: rubbing alcohol on a cloth, used sparingly, then rinse.
  • Sticky residue from tape or stickers: a small amount of cooking oil on a cloth loosens it, then wash with soapy water.
  • Pet accidents: clean quickly with mild soapy water so liquid doesn't reach the joints. Our pet-friendly cleaning guide has more on odours.

Protecting a newly renovated floor

New vinyl floors in a fresh BTO or renovated flat face their toughest period right after renovation and move-in.

  • Clear construction dust properly before the first wet mop. Fine dust mixed with water turns into a gritty paste that scratches. Our post-renovation cleaning guide explains the order of work.
  • Fit felt pads under chair and table legs before moving furniture in.
  • Lift, don't drag heavy furniture and appliances.
  • Use doormats at the entrance and the kitchen.
  • Keep direct sunlight in check with curtains or blinds where the floor gets strong afternoon sun, as UV can fade some vinyl.

Vinyl compared with other floors

Vinyl is more forgiving than marble, which etches with acid, and more water-tolerant than real timber. Its weak spots are the joints and the thin wear layer, so the care is all about controlled moisture and keeping grit off.

When a cleaner handles it

Vinyl floors are a regular part of the floor cleaning we do, whether as part of a recurring session or a floor cleaning job. Our cleaners use the mop and cleaner you provide, so you can choose a product that matches your manufacturer's care guide. If the floor is one part of a whole-home reset, our deep cleaning hub explains what else gets covered.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a steam mop on SPC flooring?

Most manufacturers advise against it, because heat and steam can get into the click joints and affect the core or underlay. A damp microfibre mop is safer and cleans just as well.

Why does my vinyl floor look dull and streaky?

Usually it's cleaner residue from using too much product, or a wax or polish that shouldn't have been used. Mop with plain warm water a few times to lift the build-up, then switch to a diluted pH-neutral cleaner.

Is vinyl flooring waterproof?

The surface is water-resistant, but water can still seep through joints and edges if it sits there. Wipe spills promptly and avoid flooding the floor when mopping.

What's the best mop for vinyl floors?

A flat microfibre mop that can be wrung almost dry. It holds less water than a string mop and picks up fine dust well.
