New BTO Cleaning Tips: Habits That Keep a New Flat Looking New

2 October 20266 min read

New to home cleaning? Start with our complete guide to Home Cleaning Services in Singapore.

The first year in a new BTO flat is when your cleaning habits get set, and when new surfaces are easiest to protect. Vinyl floors, quartz or sintered stone counters, fresh grout and new paint all look their best now, and the right routine keeps them that way. The wrong one, usually harsh chemicals, abrasive pads or too much water, can leave marks that no amount of cleaning removes later.

Here's what to do in your first twelve months, from the weeks after moving in to the end of HDB's defects liability period.

Months one to three: the dust keeps coming

Even after a post-renovation clean, fine dust keeps appearing for weeks. It settles out of the air, drifts from cabinet interiors and comes off newly installed fittings. This is normal.

  • Wipe surfaces more often than you think you need to. Two or three times a week at first, using a damp microfibre cloth rather than a dry duster, which just moves dust around.
  • Clean inside cabinets and wardrobes before filling them. Carpentry dust settles on shelves and drawer runners.
  • Vacuum before mopping. Grit dragged across a new floor causes fine scratches.
  • Wash aircon filters early. Renovation dust clogs them fast; our guide to cleaning aircon filters at home shows how.

If the flat wasn't properly cleaned after renovation, a one-time reset makes everything easier. Our BTO key collection cleaning guide and post-renovation cleaning checklist cover what's involved.

Protecting new surfaces

Vinyl flooring

Many BTO bedrooms come with vinyl strip flooring, and many owners choose vinyl throughout. It's practical, but it doesn't like standing water, strong solvents or grit.

  • Use a well-wrung mop or a flat mop with a damp pad, never a soaking wet one
  • Choose a pH-neutral floor cleaner, or plain water for routine mopping
  • Put felt pads under chair and table legs
  • Keep a doormat at the entrance to stop grit coming in
  • Wipe spills promptly so liquid doesn't seep into the joints

Our vinyl flooring cleaning guide goes into more detail.

Quartz and sintered stone countertops

These are tough, but not indestructible. Strong alkaline or acidic cleaners, oven cleaner and bleach can dull the surface over time, and hot pots straight from the stove can cause marks.

  • Wipe with warm water and a little dish soap
  • Use a trivet for hot pans
  • Clean up turmeric, curry and oil promptly, since strong colours can stain if left
  • Avoid scouring pads and abrasive powders

Fresh grout and silicone

New grout is at its cleanest now, and the first year decides whether it stays that way. Ventilate the bathroom after every shower, squeegee walls and glass, and give grout a gentle scrub weekly before mould has a chance to take hold.

New paint

Fresh walls mark easily. Spot-clean scuffs with a barely damp cloth and test any cleaner in a hidden spot first. Avoid magic sponges on matte paint, since they can leave shiny patches.

Products to avoid on new finishes

ProductWhy to avoid on new finishes
Vinegar and lemon on stoneAcids can dull stone and some engineered surfaces
Bleach as an everyday cleanerHarsh on grout colour, fittings and some surfaces
Abrasive powders and scouring padsScratch vinyl, quartz, stainless steel and glossy cabinets
Steam mops on vinylHeat and moisture can affect the joints of some vinyl products
Mixing productsSome combinations give off harmful fumes

Check each product's label against your surface's care instructions; your contractor or supplier can usually tell you what suits your specific floor and countertop. For more on what never to mix, read our guide to dangerous cleaning product combinations.

Habits to lock in during year one

  1. Shoes off at the door. The single biggest saving on floor cleaning.
  2. Degrease after wok cooking. Wipe the hob, splashback and cooker hood panel while they're still warm.
  3. Squeegee and ventilate the bathroom. Every shower, every time.
  4. Clean the cooker hood filter monthly if you cook often.
  5. Empty the kitchen bin daily in a humid climate, and wipe the bin itself weekly.
  6. Keep the service yard drain clear and check for standing water, which matters for dengue prevention.

Use your defects liability period

HDB's defects liability period runs for 12 months from key collection. Regular cleaning is a good chance to spot problems while they're still covered: hairline cracks, tiles that sound hollow, water stains on ceilings, doors that don't close properly or windows that leak during heavy rain. Note anything unusual and report it to HDB's Building Service Centre before the period ends.

A realistic routine for a new flat

Weekly: vacuum and mop, clean bathrooms, wipe kitchen surfaces and appliance exteriors, dust furniture and sills.

Monthly: cooker hood filter, aircon filters, sliding window tracks, inside the fridge.

Every three to six months: a deeper clean of grout, cabinet interiors, fans, light fittings and windows.

Many new homeowners are juggling full-time jobs and the flat-furnishing to-do list, so it helps to get help from the start. Cleaning Assistant serves BTO flats across Singapore on weekly or fortnightly plans. You provide the supplies, which suits a new home well: you choose the products your contractor recommends for your vinyl, quartz and cabinets, and you know exactly what touches them. Our guide to home cleaning services in Singapore explains what a regular visit includes.

Frequently asked questions

How long does renovation dust keep appearing in a new BTO?

Fine dust can keep settling for several weeks after works finish, especially from cabinets and the air. Wiping surfaces with a damp cloth a few times a week and washing aircon filters early helps it clear faster.

What is the safest way to mop vinyl flooring?

Vacuum or sweep first, then use a well-wrung mop with water or a pH-neutral floor cleaner. Avoid soaking the floor or using harsh solvents, and wipe spills quickly so liquid doesn't get into the joints.

Can I use bleach on my new quartz countertop?

It's best avoided for routine cleaning. Warm water and mild dish soap handle daily grime, and you can check your supplier's care guide for anything stronger.

When does my BTO defects liability period end?

HDB's defects liability period lasts 12 months from the date you collect your keys. Report defects you notice during that time to HDB so they can be assessed and fixed.
