Cleaning Supplies List for Your Part-Time Cleaner: What to Prepare

10 October 20266 min read

Looking for flexible home help? See our complete guide to Part Time Cleaning in Singapore.

Your part-time cleaner needs a basic kit of tools and a handful of products: a vacuum, a mop and bucket, microfibre cloths, a toilet brush, scrub brushes and gloves, plus a multi-purpose cleaner, a bathroom cleaner, a glass cleaner, a degreaser and a floor cleaner suited to your floor. With those ready in one place, a cleaner can cover a standard session from start to finish without stopping to improvise.

At Cleaning Assistant, customers provide the supplies and equipment, and our cleaners do not bring products. That keeps the hourly rate free of product mark-ups, and it means you decide exactly what is used around your children, pets and surfaces. Here is the list we suggest.

The tools

Essentials

  • Vacuum cleaner with a crevice tool and a brush head. A cordless stick vacuum is fine for most HDB flats; homes with rugs or pets benefit from stronger suction.
  • Mop and bucket. A flat microfibre mop or a spin mop both work. A wringer matters, because over-wet mopping is bad for timber and vinyl and leaves streaks on tile.
  • Microfibre cloths, at least six to eight. Colour-coding helps: one colour for bathrooms, another for the kitchen, another for dusting and glass.
  • Toilet brush with a holder, ideally one that reaches under the rim.
  • Scrub brushes: a stiff hand brush for grout and floor stains, and an old toothbrush for taps, tracks and corners.
  • Rubber gloves, in the cleaner's size if you know it. Keep a spare pair.
  • Rubbish bags in the right sizes for your bins.

Useful extras

  • Squeegee for shower glass and windows
  • Extendable duster for ceiling corners, fan blades and the tops of wardrobes
  • Step stool, stable and non-slip, so nobody stands on chairs
  • Non-scratch scouring pads for the hob and sink
  • Spray bottles if you buy concentrates and dilute them

The products, room by room

You do not need a cupboard full of specialist sprays. A short list covers almost everything.

Match the floor cleaner to the floor

Using the wrong product on a floor can dull, etch or warp it, so this is worth getting right.

  • Ceramic or porcelain tile: a general neutral floor cleaner works well.
  • Vinyl or SPC: a mild, pH-neutral cleaner and a well-wrung mop. Avoid soaking the joints. See our vinyl flooring cleaning guide.
  • Marble and natural stone: a pH-neutral stone cleaner only. Acidic products, including vinegar and many bathroom sprays, can etch the surface. Our marble floor cleaning guide explains why.
  • Timber or engineered wood: a wood-safe cleaner and minimal water.

If you have more than one floor type, label the bottles or tell your cleaner which one goes where.

What to avoid

  • Mixing products. Bleach with ammonia-based or acidic cleaners releases harmful fumes. Keep bleach and mould removers separate, and do not decant different products into the same unlabelled bottle. Read more in dangerous cleaning product combinations.
  • Abrasive powders on glass, stainless steel or stone, which leave scratches.
  • Too many overlapping products. Three sprays that do the same thing just slow the cleaner down while they decide which to use.
  • Nearly empty bottles. Check stock before each visit. Running out halfway through a session wastes paid time.

Supplies for kids, pets and sensitive skin

Choosing your own products is a real advantage here. If you have a baby, a crawling toddler or a pet that licks the floor, you can pick fragrance-free or milder products and tell your cleaner to use only those. If someone in the home has asthma or eczema, the same applies. Just make sure the product is still effective for the job, and that you leave clear instructions. Our pet-friendly cleaning guide has more on this.

Set up a cleaning caddy

The single most time-saving thing you can do is put everything in one place.

  1. Pick a spot that is easy to reach, such as the service yard, a utility cupboard or under the kitchen sink.
  2. Use a caddy or basket for sprays, cloths, brushes and gloves, so the cleaner can carry it from room to room.
  3. Keep the vacuum, mop and bucket together nearby.
  4. Label anything decanted and anything that should only be used on one surface.
  5. Show your cleaner on the first visit, along with where to put rubbish and recycling.

Store it out of reach of young children, and keep chemicals away from food.

Restocking

Microfibre cloths last a long time if they are washed after each session without fabric softener, which reduces how well they absorb. Replace the toilet brush and scrub brushes every few months. Keep a note on your phone of what is running low after each visit, or ask your cleaner to tell you before they leave.

Frequently asked questions

Do part-time cleaners in Singapore bring their own supplies?

It depends on the company. With Cleaning Assistant, customers provide the supplies and equipment. That means no mark-ups on products, and you control exactly what is used in your home.

What is the minimum I need for a first cleaning session?

A vacuum, a mop and bucket, a few microfibre cloths, a toilet brush, rubber gloves, a multi-purpose cleaner, a bathroom cleaner and a floor cleaner suitable for your floor. That covers a standard session; you can add extras later.

Can I ask the cleaner to use only certain products?

Yes. Tell your cleaner which products to use and which to avoid, especially for marble, timber or anything used around babies and pets. Labelling bottles makes this easy.

Is vinegar safe to use for cleaning?

Diluted vinegar is fine on glass and many tiles, but it should not be used on marble, granite or other natural stone, because the acid can etch the surface. Never mix vinegar with bleach.
