A part-time cleaner in Hougang is often cleaning for three generations under one roof. Grandparents, working parents and children all share one 4-room, 5-room or executive flat. A good arrangement covers the shared spaces thoroughly every visit and handles each generation's needs on a rotation. That usually means a weekly visit of 3.5 to 5 hours, depending on flat size and how many people live there.
Hougang: an old name, a mature town
Hougang has deep roots. The name comes from a Hokkien and Teochew term usually translated as "river end", referring to its position up the Sungei Serangoon. Before the HDB era the area was known for farms and a strong Teochew community, and its temples still reflect that heritage.
HDB development began in the late 1970s. The first neighbourhoods were finished by the early 1980s, more followed through the 1980s and early 1990s, and the town centre was completed in 1994. As a result, much of Hougang's housing is now 30 to 45 years old: sturdy, roomy flats, many of them 4-room, 5-room and executive units. Newer blocks have been added in pockets over the years, so some streets mix 1980s flats with recent BTOs.
There are two town centres. The original one at Kovan has Heartland Mall and the Kovan market and food centre. The newer Hougang Central has Hougang Mall next to the bus interchange. The North East Line serves Kovan, Hougang and Buangkok stations, and Hougang station is being built into an interchange with the future Cross Island Line. Punggol Park is the area's best-loved green space, and there are landed pockets around Kovan and Upper Serangoon.
One flat, three generations: who needs what
Multi-generational households are common in Hougang. Each generation affects the cleaning in a different way.
For grandparents
- Dry, clutter-free floors in the bathroom, kitchen and walkways to reduce slips
- Bathroom grab bars, taps and handles wiped and sanitised
- The bedroom kept fresh: bed linen changed and windows opened to air the room, since older people often spend more time in theirs
- Mild products: many older people are sensitive to strong smells
For working parents
- The kitchen reset: counters, hob surround, splashback and appliance exteriors cleaned so weekday cooking starts fresh
- Bed-making and ironing: ironing is available as an extra on request, useful for work shirts and school uniforms
- Common areas presentable for visiting relatives
For children
- Floors under dining tables and in play areas
- Bathroom splashes around the sink and toilet
- Study desks wiped and tidied
When everyone shares one flat, a short written priority list helps the cleaner balance these needs instead of guessing. Our guide on preparing your home before the cleaner arrives has a template.
Small things that matter in a family home
- Altars and prayer areas. Many Hougang households keep a family altar. Agree in advance whether the cleaner should dust around it, and which items should not be moved or touched. Cleaners will follow your wishes.
- Shoe areas. Big households mean a lot of shoes at the door, which brings in grit and smells. Wiping shoe racks and the floor around them helps a lot. See our shoe cabinet cleaning guide.
- The service yard. More people means more laundry, and more lint and damp in the service yard. A monthly deeper wipe-down stops mould behind the washing machine.
Older blocks vs newer blocks in Hougang
| 1980s and early 1990s flats | Newer blocks | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical size | Larger 4-room, 5-room and executive | 3-room to 5-room BTO |
| Common issues | Built-up kitchen grease, older grout, worn tiles | Construction dust nearby, new-flat residue |
| Floors | Ceramic, homogeneous or older tiles | Often vinyl or homogeneous tiles |
| Cleaning approach | Gentle, consistent degreasing and grout care | Light, regular upkeep with care for vinyl |
Our guide to cleaning older HDB flats covers the first column in depth, and the new BTO first-year guide covers the second.

How it works with Cleaning Assistant
We serve homes in Hougang and across Singapore at simple hourly rates: $20/hr for your first ad-hoc trial, $23/hr for weekly or fortnightly plans and $26/hr for on-demand ad-hoc visits, with same-day service available. There are no agency fees, levy, contracts or hidden charges.
You provide the cleaning supplies and equipment. In a multi-generational household that's practical: you can keep the products grandparents are comfortable with, avoid strong fragrances, and never pay a mark-up. Our cleaners are trained, background-checked and insured. On recurring plans we do our best to send the same cleaner, which older family members in particular tend to appreciate.
If you're mainly arranging help for ageing parents living on their own, our guide to a part-time cleaner for elderly parents may be more useful.

Frequently asked questions
How many hours should I book for a 5-room flat with six people?
Start with about 4.5 to 5 hours weekly. Larger households create more floor dirt, laundry and bathroom use, so the upper end of the estimate is usually realistic.
Will the cleaner clean around our family altar?
Only as you instruct. Tell the cleaner whether to dust around the altar and which items must stay untouched, and they'll follow that.
Can the cleaner iron clothes for the whole family?
Ironing is available as an extra on request. Bear in mind that time spent ironing comes out of the cleaning hours, so book a little longer if you want both.
Do you clean the newer HDB blocks in Hougang too?
Yes. We clean older and newer HDB flats, condos and landed homes throughout Hougang, as well as across the rest of Singapore.
