Home Cleaning in Katong & Joo Chiat: Shophouses, Terraces and Tiles
7 October 20266 min read
Home cleaning in Katong and Joo Chiat is mostly about heritage surfaces. That means patterned Peranakan tiles, timber floorboards and staircases, louvred windows and airwells, along with the dust and cooking smells that come with living near some of Singapore's best-loved food streets. A part-time cleaner who uses gentle methods and has enough time for multi-level homes is what most households here need. Plan on 4 to 7 hours for a terrace or shophouse, and 3 to 4 hours for a boutique condo unit.
The neighbourhood and its homes
Katong and Joo Chiat sit between Geylang Serai to the north and Marine Parade to the south. The area grew up as a seaside retreat and then a Peranakan and Eurasian heartland. Much of its pre-war architecture survives, and large parts are protected as conservation areas.
The housing here is unlike anywhere else in the east.
- Two- and three-storey shophouses along Joo Chiat Road and East Coast Road, many converted into homes upstairs with shops or cafes below.
- Terrace houses on streets like Koon Seng Road, famous for pastel facades, ornate plasterwork and colourful tiles.
- Boutique condos and small apartment blocks squeezed into side streets, popular with young professionals and expat families.
- A scattering of HDB blocks towards the edges of the area.
The area is known for its food: Katong laksa, Peranakan kueh and late-night eateries along East Coast Road and Joo Chiat Road. Getting around is easier than it used to be. Tanjong Katong and Marine Parade stations on the Thomson-East Coast Line serve the southern side, and Paya Lebar and Eunos on the East-West Line are within reach to the north. i12 Katong and Parkway Parade cover everyday shopping.
Caring for heritage surfaces: what to do and what to avoid
Older and restored homes often have materials that modern cleaning habits can damage. Here's a practical guide.
Peranakan and encaustic tiles
- Do sweep or vacuum first, then damp-mop with a pH-neutral cleaner diluted in warm water.
- Do dry the floor afterwards to stop water seeping into old grout.
- Don't use vinegar, bleach or acidic toilet cleaners on decorative tiles. They can dull the glaze and eat into grout.
- Don't scrub with abrasive pads on hand-painted or glazed surfaces.
Timber floorboards and staircases
- Do dust-mop or vacuum with a soft head. Grit is what scratches timber.
- Do use a barely damp mop with a timber-safe cleaner.
- Don't pour water on timber. It swells boards and seeps into the gaps, which can show as stains on the ceiling below.
Louvred windows, shutters and airwells
- Do wipe each louvre slat with a damp microfibre cloth, then dry. Dust collects on the top edge of every slat.
- Do check airwells and open courtyards for standing water. NEA advises households to remove stagnant water regularly to prevent mosquito breeding, and airwell drains, plant saucers and roof gutters are easy to overlook. See the NEA dengue prevention guidance and our dengue prevention cleaning guide.
- Don't leave airwell floors wet. In our humidity they turn green quickly.
Living near the food streets
Homes above or beside eateries pick up more grease in the air, more cooking smells and, sometimes, more pests drawn by food waste. A few habits make a big difference.
- Wipe kitchen and window surfaces facing the street more often, because a light greasy film builds up even if you rarely cook.
- Keep bins lidded and take rubbish out regularly.
- Air rooms in the morning, when street cooking is at its quietest.

How long a clean takes for typical Katong and Joo Chiat homes
These are estimates for one cleaner in a regularly cleaned home. Multi-storey homes are often split across two sessions in the week.
| Home type | Estimated time per visit |
|---|---|
| Boutique condo, 2 bedrooms | 3 to 3.5 hours |
| Boutique condo, 3 bedrooms | 3.5 to 4.5 hours |
| Two-storey terrace house | 5 to 6 hours |
| Three-storey shophouse home | 6 to 7.5 hours |
| HDB 4-room flat | 3 to 4 hours |
Staircases, louvres and decorative tiles all take more time than plain surfaces, so book generously for the first few visits. Our guide to cleaning landed houses explains how to split a large home across visits.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use bleach on my Peranakan floor tiles?
It's best not to. Bleach and acidic cleaners can dull glazes and weaken old grout. A pH-neutral cleaner, a well-wrung mop and drying the floor afterwards is the safer routine.
How many hours does a three-storey shophouse take to clean?
For a regularly cleaned shophouse home, expect about 6 to 7.5 hours with one cleaner. Many owners split this across two visits in the week.
Do your cleaners clean timber staircases?
Yes. Stairs and railings are part of a home clean. Cleaners use a soft vacuum or dust-mop and a barely damp cloth so the timber isn't soaked.
Is airwell cleaning included?
Wiping and sweeping airwell floors, checking for standing water and clearing plant saucers can be included in your session. Just put it on your priority list when you book.
