Part-Time Cleaner in Marine Parade: Caring for 1970s Flats and Condos

A part-time cleaner in Marine Parade will mostly be working in two kinds of homes. The first is HDB flats built in the 1970s, which are now among the oldest in the east. The second is the condos lining Marine Parade Road and the East Coast. Older flats need gentle, careful work on worn fittings and tired grout. Condos need attention to glass, balconies and sea-facing frames. For most homes, a regular visit of 3 to 4.5 hours, weekly or fortnightly, does the job.

A short history that explains a lot

Marine Parade stands on reclaimed land. Reclamation along the east coast began in 1966, and in 1971 the government announced a public housing estate for the new land. The first batch of flats was ready by 1973, the Marine Drive blocks followed by 1975, and the estate was fully up and running by the late 1970s.

Several things follow from that.

  • Many flats are around 50 years old. They have older layouts, smaller bathrooms, older pipes and, in some units, original or early-generation tiles and fittings that need gentler cleaning.
  • The population skews older. Many residents moved in as young families and stayed, so a lot of homes are now lived in by retirees or older couples.
  • The sea is still close. East Coast Park was built along the new shoreline from the 1970s. Breezes off the water still reach the blocks, carrying humidity and a little salt.

Parkway Parade has been the area's shopping anchor for decades, and Marine Parade Central is the heart of the estate with its market and food centre. Since June 2024 the Thomson-East Coast Line has served the area at Marine Parade and Marine Terrace stations, with Tanjong Katong and Siglap nearby. Private condos, some of them older developments with big balconies and others new, sit along Marine Parade Road and towards the park.

What ageing flats need, and how to handle it

What you noticeWhy it happens in older flatsWhat the cleaner should do
Grey or black grout in the bathroomDecades of moisture, small tiles, limited ventilationScrub with a stiff brush and suitable cleaner every visit; keep the window or fan running
Stains around the toilet baseOlder seals and fittings, harder to clean edgesDetailed wipe around the base, bolts and hinges
Sticky kitchen cabinet topsLong-term wok cooking and older cooker hoodsDegrease one cabinet zone per visit instead of skimming all
Dull floorsWorn tiles or terrazzo, uneven jointsNeutral cleaner, well-wrung mop, no harsh acids
Musty smell in wardrobesClosed cupboards and high humidityAir them out, wipe interiors, check for mould on back panels
Gritty window sillsDust plus salt from the coastDamp wipe, then dry thoroughly

The key in older flats is gentle and consistent rather than aggressive. Harsh acids, abrasive pads and too much water can do more damage to old surfaces than the dirt itself. Our guide on cleaning older HDB flats goes into this in depth.

Cleaning with safety in mind

Many Marine Parade homes have older residents, so a good regular clean is as much about reducing fall risk as it is about appearance.

  • Dry floors fully. Mop with a well-wrung mop and dry wet patches, especially in the bathroom and kitchen.
  • Clear walkways. Ask the cleaner to put items back where they belong and leave corridors free of clutter.
  • Clean grab bars and handles. These are high-touch points that rarely get wiped.
  • Keep products simple. At Cleaning Assistant you provide the supplies. That way you can pick mild, familiar products that suit sensitive skin or breathing, and nothing unfamiliar is brought into the home.

Condos along Marine Parade Road and the East Coast

Condo homes in the area tend to need:

  • Balcony cleaning. Dust, salt and leaves collect on sea-facing balconies, along with the occasional bird mess. Balcony cleaning is available as an extra on request, and our balcony cleaning guide explains how to do it without flooding the floor below.
  • Glass doors and large windows. Interior glass and frames are part of a standard clean. Exterior panes are cleaned only where they can be reached safely.
  • Bigger bathrooms. Many condo bathrooms have glass shower screens that show soap scum quickly.

How long a clean takes for typical Marine Parade homes

These are estimates for one cleaner in a regularly cleaned home.

  • 3-room HDB flat: around 2.5 to 3 hours
  • 4-room HDB flat: around 3 to 3.5 hours
  • 5-room HDB flat: around 4 to 4.5 hours
  • Condo, 2 to 3 bedrooms: around 3 to 4.5 hours, plus extra time if the balcony is included

A first visit to a flat with years of build-up often takes 30 to 50 percent longer, or works better as a deep clean.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cleaner remove the black grout in a 1970s bathroom?

Regular scrubbing lightens surface mould and stops it from spreading. Grout that is stained deep inside or crumbling may need regrouting, which is a handyman job rather than a cleaning one.

Is a part-time cleaner suitable for an elderly parent living alone in Marine Parade?

Yes. Many families book a weekly 2 to 3 hour visit to cover floors, bathrooms and the kitchen. Asking for the same cleaner on a recurring plan helps build trust and routine.

Do you clean sea-facing balconies in condos?

Yes. Balcony cleaning is available as an extra on request. We clean what can be reached safely from the balcony itself, but not external facades or ledges.

What cleaning products are safest on old terrazzo floors?

Use a pH-neutral floor cleaner and avoid vinegar, bleach-heavy mixes and abrasive powders, which can etch or dull terrazzo over time.
