Hiring a Part-Time Cleaner in Bedok: What Older Flats Really Need

Hiring a part-time cleaner in Bedok works best when the cleaner focuses on what ages fastest in older flats. That means kitchens with years of wok grease, bathrooms with tired grout, and window grilles that collect dust and salty air from the coast. A regular weekly or fortnightly visit of 3 to 5 hours keeps most Bedok flats in good order. A one-off deep clean is worth doing first if the flat hasn't had help in a while.

Why Bedok homes are a bit different

Bedok is one of Singapore's oldest and largest HDB towns. It grew out of the East Coast reclamation scheme that began in 1966, and the first residential flats were ready by the mid-1970s. Neighbourhoods such as Bedok Reservoir and Kaki Bukit followed in the 1980s. As a result, a large share of the town's flats are 40 to 50 years old. Many have been upgraded over the years, but they still have older layouts, older pipes and plenty of tiled surfaces.

The town divides roughly into a few areas, and each one has its own character.

  • Bedok North. Dense HDB blocks around Bedok North Avenue and Street, close to the famous food centres around Fengshan. These are busy family homes where the kitchen gets heavy use.
  • Bedok South. Older blocks nearer the coast and East Coast Park. These homes get more breeze off the sea, and with it a fine salty film on grilles and window frames.
  • Bedok Reservoir. Slightly newer blocks next to Bedok Reservoir Park. Many households here have young children or keep pets.
  • Around the town centre. Bedok Mall and the integrated bus interchange anchor the area, with the East-West Line at Bedok station. Kembangan and Tanah Merah stations sit on either side.

The Downtown Line also serves the northern part of the town at Bedok North, Bedok Reservoir and Kaki Bukit. There are condos and some landed pockets towards Bedok South, Upper East Coast and Kembangan.

The five jobs that matter most in a Bedok flat

From the way mature-estate homes age, this is the order of priority we'd suggest for a regular cleaner.

  1. The kitchen, top to bottom. Grease rises. In a 40-year-old kitchen it coats the cabinet tops, the wall above the hob, the exterior of the cooker hood and the light fitting. Ask your cleaner to degrease one zone each visit rather than skimming everything.
  2. Bathroom grout and floor traps. Older bathrooms have small tiles and a lot of grout, and that is where mould shows first. A stiff brush and a suitable bathroom cleaner, used every week, stop it from setting in. Our guide to toilet spots people always miss lists the problem areas.
  3. Window grilles, frames and sills. In Bedok South especially, sea air leaves a dull, slightly sticky layer that attracts dust. Wipe it with a damp cloth first, then dry it. Wiping dry just smears the salt around.
  4. Floors, including old terrazzo or homogeneous tiles. Use a neutral cleaner and don't flood the floor. Older floors often have uneven joints where dirty water collects.
  5. Service yard and laundry corner. Lint, damp and dust gather here and feed mould on the walls behind the washing machine.

If your flat has a lot of old grout or wall mould, our guide to cleaning older HDB flats goes into the methods in more detail.

How long a clean takes for typical Bedok homes

These are estimates for a standard clean by one cleaner in a home that is kept up regularly. First visits run longer.

  • 3-room flat (common in the older blocks): about 2.5 to 3 hours
  • 4-room flat: about 3 to 4 hours
  • 5-room or executive flat: about 4 to 5.5 hours
  • Condo apartment near Upper East Coast or Kembangan: about 3 to 4.5 hours, depending on bedrooms and balcony size
  • Landed terrace: usually 5 hours or more, often split across two visits

Flats that have been lived in for a long time often have more furniture and more items on surfaces, which adds time. A quick tidy before the cleaner arrives frees up more of the session for real cleaning. Our preparation guide explains what helps.

What it costs and how it works

Cleaning Assistant serves homes in Bedok and across Singapore at simple hourly rates.

OptionRate
First ad-hoc trial$20/hr
Weekly or fortnightly recurring$23/hr
On-demand ad-hoc (same-day available)$26/hr

There are no agency fees, levy, contracts or hidden charges. You supply the cleaning products and equipment, which means no mark-ups and full control over what's used in your home. That matters if you have elderly parents with sensitive skin, or you prefer certain brands for an old marble or terrazzo floor. Cleaners are trained, background-checked and insured.

On recurring plans we do our best to send the same cleaner each visit. That helps in older flats, where a cleaner who knows which tap is loose or which tiles are fragile can work faster and more carefully.

A good fit for elderly households

Bedok has a lot of long-time residents, and many adult children arrange a part-time cleaner for parents who still live in the family flat. Two or three hours a week can take care of floors, bathrooms and the kitchen. That reduces slip risks and lets parents stay independent. Our guide to arranging a part-time cleaner for elderly parents covers how to set this up sensitively.

Frequently asked questions

Can a part-time cleaner handle a very greasy old kitchen in one visit?

A regular visit makes steady progress, but very heavy grease built up over years is better tackled with a one-off deep clean first. After that, weekly upkeep keeps it from coming back.

Do you clean homes in Bedok Reservoir and Kaki Bukit too?

Yes. We serve homes throughout the Bedok area, including Bedok North, Bedok South, Bedok Reservoir and Kaki Bukit, as well as across Singapore.

Why do my window grilles feel sticky even after wiping?

Near the coast, salt in the air mixes with dust and leaves a tacky film. Wipe with a damp cloth and mild detergent, then dry it. A dry duster only spreads the residue.

Is it safe to use strong cleaners on old terrazzo floors?

Avoid acidic or harsh products on terrazzo, because they can dull and etch the surface. A pH-neutral floor cleaner and a well-wrung mop is the safer choice.
